DECEMBER 9, 1994 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 23
ON THE AIR OFF THE PRESS
Stars are coming out, and Feagler should wake up
by John Graves
Entertainment entrepreneur David Geffen, one of the wealthiest and most powerful openly gay men in the country, was interviewed recently by Barbara Walters on ABC's 20/20. In the interview, Walters asks Geffen about his past romances with Cher and Marlo Thomas saying, "David, you've never hidden the fact that you're gay ... How could you have been in love with these women when you really prefer men? Geffen responds saying, "Cher and Marlo knew everything there was to know about me. I've never kept it a secret. After Marlo and I broke up, I thought I really had to pursue seeing who I was as a gay man, and I have done so."
Victoria Brownworth interviews singer Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls in the cover article of the December issue of Deneuve magazine. Also featured is an interview with Denise Crosby, who played Lt. Tasha Yar on the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation and more recently played Lil in the lesbian-themed play Last Summer At Bluefish Cove.
The November issue of Genre features an interview with openly gay Rep. Barney Frank and his lover of seven years, Herb Moses; and an interview with Star Trek star Patrick Stewart about his role in the upcoming film version of the hit Broadway gay play, Jeffrey.
Asked about how he felt about his first gay role, Stewart, who plays Sterling, Jeffrey's best friend, replied, "I feel fine as this character. Absolutely fine... I believe so much in the subject and how it is handled by the script, that I had absolutely no doubts whatsoever that it was something I must do. In every possible way I adore this character. I have great affection for him. I don't know
what might be left behind when I move on from Sterling, but I have a feeling there's been some adjustment going on in me about how I feel about things. I'm delighted that all of this has happened."
My So Called Life co-star Wilson Cruz, who plays bisexual teenager Ricki Vasquez, comes out of the closet in real life in an article profiling him in the November 1 edition
of the Advocate.

Hope you saw the extensive articles on lesbian and gay churches in the Cleveland Plain Dealer a few weeks ago. Thanks to the Plain Dealer for not running the usual anti-gay companion piece for "balance."
When talk comes to preserving families and "family values," we will not rest until you realize that our families must be included.
of the group Luscious Jackson and Josephine Wiggs of the Breeders. The Judybats lead singer, Jeff Heiskell, comes out of the closet in an article in the November 15 edition of the Advocate.
The September/October issue of Girl Friends magazine reports that former Archie Bunker's Place child actress Danielle Brisbois is out of the closet. Brisbois has a new album out called Arrive All Over You. The magazine also profiled 75-year-old actress Peg Phillips, who plays shopkeeper Ruth Ann on Northern Exposure.
Have you ever placed a "Person-To-Personals" ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer? If so, WCPN 96.3 FM reporter Jane Maxwell would like to talk to you, and is specifically asking for comments from Cleveland's lesbian, gay bisexual and transgendered community. If you remember, it was through the efforts of Gaywaves and other members of our community that persuaded the Plain Dealer to include gay listings after the paper initially decided to run only heterosexual
But all is not rosy at the Plain Dealer. Columnist Dick Feagler displayed his
bigotry in his column on the Republican victories in the November 11 edition. In the column, Feagler appears to speak for mainstream America and applauds a post-election return to the closet for gays, people of color, women, and their issues. Lesbians and gays in the closet and discriminated against, people of color out of sight and out of mind in the ghetto and women as second-class citizens and sex objects. Is this the American Dream or are Feagler's words the reflections of the dominant Caucasian, heterosexual male called to task for past evils and wishing for the time when that kind of discrimination was okay?
Wake up Dick, Gone With The Wind is an old movie about an evil period in this country's history and Ozzie and Harriet is an old TV show about a lifestyle that was fictional even then. If you think we are all going to go away and not press our government for
our rights as citizens of this country, then you are sadly mistaken.
When talk comes to preserving families and "family values," we will not rest until you realize that our families must be included. You must realize that "family values" are values that affirm and respect all of our lives, not those that demonize and marginalize some people because of bigotry, religious or otherwise, passed on from generation to generation and taught in our schools. We expect and demand our educational system to teach respect and inclusiveness for all people to all children from all types of families. We expect and demand that the family protective laws, regulations and policies that the Republicans are proposing protect our families too. We expect and demand that our people and our families be represented on television, in film, in literature and in the news.
If you want respect, you must give respect. If we are all to celebrate your sexuality, your romances and your families that we are constantly bombarded with in this society, then you must celebrate ours.
The debate over gays being allowed to serve openly in the military focused on the "privilege" of serving this country in the military. You only have to remember the scorn heaped on those who were exempt from serving during wartime, or the charges against President Clinton during the last presidential campaign to realize that military service is required for full access to citizenship in this country.
You'll soon find out that it would be easier to get Rush Limbaugh to shut up than to get people of color, women or gays back in the closet or "off the national clock" as you stated in your column.
